FEEDBACK

I truly believe SEJ totally helped me excel as both a coxswain, teammate, and person. I had such a great time and learned so much. I still use things I learned today and will continue to use them next year at Cal.
~'07 Kathryn Meister, Los Gatos, Palo Alto, CA (University of California)

I just wanted to thank you for everything you did at camp. Camp was a great opportunity to row a highly competitive level and have exposure to college coaches. From feedback on the water and video, to weight/ core training on land, I feel my rowing improved significantly. The camp was challenging and a lot of work, but in the long-run the result was well worth it. The experience of competing at Club Nationals is something that I will never forget. Both years I learned so much and I really appreciate all the work that you did.
~'07/'08 Jackie Riedel, Shrewsbury HS, Shrewsbury, MA (University of Indiana)

Thank you for the amazing experience I had at Southeast Juniors. The camp itself was extremely difficult but I feel as if all the hard work.. paid off at Club Nationals. My rowing has changed dramatically over the last three weeks; my technique and power has improved immensely... making me not only a stronger rower but a stronger person. I truly appreciate all of the time and effort you put into this camp and I wanted to let you know the affect it has had on my rowing. Also, your wife did an amazing job on the food at nationals and I know all of the rowers loved it.
~'07  Elle Murray H.B. Plant HS, Tampa FL
(Virginia)

I just wanted to say thank you again for having the SEJ camp. It was great both years. I was just reminded to write when I got the new issue of US Rowing and saw our boats mentioned for Nationals. It was such an amazing feeling so see how our boats finished so well this year. I am still in awe about the fact that I have a medal from a National Competition. Thank you for making that possible
~ '05/'06 Amber Zapatka, Lowell HS, Lowell MA (USNA)

Just wanted to thank you for the awesome time I had this past summer at Southeast Junior Dev. Camp. I just wanted to tell you that I pulled a 7:23.4 today, a PR (7:33.7)
~ '06 Megan Kelly Hillsborough HS, Tampa FL (Princeton)

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I cant thank you enough for all of your help! I committed to Ohio State on Sunday and I would not have been able to without your help! You were the one who first introduced me to the coaches this summer and that led me to develop a good relationship with the coaches from then on. Your camp was incredible helpful and you were such a big help to me and really helped me with my college decision.
~ '10 Ashley Bauer WestervilleHS, Westerville OH (Ohio State)

The morning I got home from the SE Dev. camp, I pulled a 2K to see how much I had improved. It turns out I dropped almost ten seconds - finally breaking 7:30! I notified a bunch of college coaches about this and I got very highly recruited. I'm going to row at UCLA next year, and I know that I would probably be going to some really obscure college if SE Dev. camp didn't help me get so much faster. Thanks again,
~ '05 Christine Fiacco St. Andrews RC. Atlanta, GA (UCLA)

June 24 - July 15 2012

Southeast Junior Development Camp (SEJ) is a co-ed, competitive, and intensive three–week summer rowing program for junior level athletes operating out of Baylor School in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

SEJ is geared for athletes that are just under the requirements of the USRowing Jr. development system or might have aged and want to prepare for college. The Southeast Junior Development Camp is not a USRowing Junior training center, and does not guarantee a spot future spot on the Junior National Team. However, Many of the SEJ participants have received an national team invitation the following year. SEJ is intended to be an unforgettable three-week intense training program for dedicated athletes that are looking for the next level of rowing conditioning and development. SEJ is specifically designed to be a challenging and rewarding experience to harness the athlete's rowing potential and to foster a lifetime love for the sport of rowing.

SEJ athletes will be immersed into a rigorous, intensive and competitive two weeks training program under the guidance of the region's top coaches. Focusing on all aspects of rowing necessary to prepare athletes for competition including blade work, body mechanics, power application, strength and conditioning, flexibility, mental training, as well as nutrition.

Athletes will experience up to four training and technical sessions per day using weight training and core strength techniques as well as race strategy on the ergometer and on the water. The camp takes into count that each of the athletes home programs uses different technique. SEJ does not try to change your stroke to a unique style, instead opting for a "vanilla style" that all athletes can learn quickly to compete within two weeks. All athletes will participate in a regatta at the close of camp, the US Rowing Club Nationals in Camden, New Jersey.

AGE REQUIRMENTS

A common question SEJ receives is, "When is the best time to attend this camp". SEJ is for junior athletes that are 18 years old as of December 31 of the current year, or of the year of completion the 12th grade.

  1. Rising Senior Athletes that would like to be identified by college coaches for recruitment.
    1. SEJ spends extra time preparing the campers for this with stroke development and resume assistance while at camp.
    2. College coaches are allowed to visit the campus after the first week and observe and meet campers.
  2. Hungry Athletes that would like to do an intense camp to make them a difference maker to improve their rowing skills and power application.
    1. To have a better chance receive an invitation to attend the USRowing Junior National Team the following year.
      1. SEJ has become a feeder for those that are just under the cutoff times required.
      2. Many SEJ alumni have successfully made the transition the following year
    2. To improve that may want at their home program. Many campers come to camp the top of their home programs, however, on the national or regional level they are not competitive.
      1. SEJ has multiple skill levels attending, this allows athletes to train with campers of equal speed and challenge themselves on a level playing field.
      2. Not all campers will make the “A” boat at camp but all will be challenged while there.
  3. College Bound Athletes that would like to prepare them or keep in shape for college in the fall. SEJ is capable of taking these athlete challenge them and allows them to race at club nationals.
  4. Athletes Under 17 that want to get a jump start and be part of a program that will set them up for success in their rowing career.
    1. SEJ takes eight male and female athletes under 17 each year.
    2. Athletes train, stay and eat with the other campers and are able to compete for seats in any boat at camp

HOUSING

The Southeast Junior Development Camp uses the boarding and dining facilities on the Baylor campus. The males will live in the Hunter dormitory and the females will live in the Riverfront and Probasscol dormitory.  There will be two to three rowers in a room together.  Every room has a dresser, a bed, a desk and a closet for each individual.  Bathrooms are located on the hall.  There will be two to three counselors in every dorm with the campers to provide a 24-hour adult presence.  The dormitories are air-conditioned and just walking distance to the dinning facility and the boathouse. If a camper’s break the housing rules established in the initial dorm meeting the camper will be removed from camp and sent home. Room assignments are made to allow each camper to meet new people. Campers are separated by home program, home state and if possible home region. The SEJ staff have found that this helps in the development of team unity over the duration of camp. The coaching staff and chaperones will reside in the dormitories and provide athletes constant supervision. It is SEJ policy that all campers live in the housing provided. This includes the campers from the Chattanooga area.

SEJ tries to provide athletes with proper meals. If you have any special food needs or allergies please let the camp staff know so that we may make arrangements.
